Welcome

Solid State Ionics is concerned with the science and technology of ions in motion in the solid state. Ions in movement may also involve electrons depending on the materials and surroundings. These days, solid state ionics is finding an increasing variety of applications: the energy conversion/storage devices, e.g. solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and Li-batteries, the information conversion/storage devices e.g. chemical sensors and electrochromics, and the material pumping/separation devices, e.g. oxygen pumps and membranes, only to name a few. The solid state ionics knowledge is also extensively mobilized to protect or predict or elongate the lifetime of structural materials in harsh service conditions, e.g. zircaloy cladding in nuclear reactors, and to improve the performance reliability of devices, e.g. multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) and ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM). Furthermore, solid state ionics is now being combined with the emerging nanotechnology to produce new knowledge and applications.

The next conference in this series, NCSSI-2009, is scheduled to take place at the Dr. Hari Singh Gour University during December 7-9, 2009. I invite all of you to take part in this important event and to exchange nodes, ideas, faster friendship and collaboration and to discuss future prospects.
